Data is moved efficiently, securely and in a controlled and managed way, reducing risk of data loss and service disruption

Host Based Data Migration

Typically, no additional cost, avoids downtime, flexible
Data is migrated at the host level, copying data using in-built O/S tools or utilising functionality built into logical volume managers

Appliance based Data Migration

Fast, flexible migration.
Data is migrated using a purpose-built migration appliance, or virtualisation appliances

Array based Data Migration

Typically, between same vendor/family arrays, sometimes seen as the easy approach
Array-based data migration uses functionality built into a particular storage vendor’s array to migrate data from existing (Source) array to new (Target) array

Application based Data Migration

Typically, no additional cost, avoids downtime, flexible
Data is migrated using utilities built into the application. This could be Oracle ASM for example

Software based Data Migration

More likely to be used for file or object migrations

Specialist software installed on customer server(s) to facilitate the movement of data. This could be from existing on-premise to cloud for example
